What is the difference between a physical exfoliant and a chemical exfoliant?
There are a few key distinctions between physical and chemical exfoliants; however, the main difference lies in the way they’re applied, and the type of ingredients used:
● Physical exfoliants
A physical exfoliant primarily focuses on removing surface-level dead skin cells and impurities with a rubbing or scrubbing action. Common physical exfoliants include exfoliating face scrubs that use gentle friction to rid the skin surface of redundant cells — like our best-selling Exfoliating Cleanser.
A physical exfoliant is ideal for achieving immediate results while stimulating circulation — which can reduce facial puffiness. Physical exfoliants are suitable for most skin types (excluding sensitive and red skins) and should only be used 2-4 times per week to avoid overuse causing skin stripping or sensitivity.
● Chemical exfoliants
Chemical exfoliants contain chemical compounds, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), enzymes or retinoids. When applied to the skin, these ingredients gently dissolve the ‘glue’ that cements the dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliants can penetrate deeper into the dermis, making them ideal for addressing specific skin concerns such as acne, uneven skin tone, texture or signs of aging.
Chemical exfoliants offer both immediate and cumulative results as they move dead skin cells to the surface to be successfully sloughed off - like our 3 in 1 Fruit Peel Mask and Multi-Functional Peel.
How often should I use the O Cosmedics Exfoliating Cleanser?
While it depends on your skin type and concerns, our face exfoliator should be used 1-4 times a week to keep your skin healthy. After your first cleanse, apply a small amount of product to your fingertips and massage the product into the face and throat using circular motions.
For a deeper, more invigorating cleanse, mix our exfoliating cleanser with our 3-in-1 Fruit Peel Mask and rinse thoroughly with warm water after two to three minutes. You can then apply your choice of corrective serums and O Hydrator.
Can the O Cosmedics Exfoliating Cleanser be used on all skin types?
While our exfoliating cleanser is suitable for most dry, oily, sensitive and congested complexions, avoid application when your skin is inflamed, red or irritated. If you’re unsure whether you’ll benefit from our face exfoliator, please send me a message on 0429146611 (Cassie). Thanks :)
